Palm: RIP

PalmPalm, yesterday, announced a new treo, to be sold through Verizon, that will run the Windows mobile operating system. The first Palm Pilot, manufactured through US Robotics, was introduced in 1996 and in the last 9 years, it has seen few improvements. Having established itself as the most popular handheld computer by keeping the experience simple, there always seemed to be conflict at Palm about what was improvement and what was a deviation from what made it successful. Today's palms are nearly identical to what they were 10 years ago, with poorly applied color and sad attempts to take advantage of today's faster processors with video and audio. Most frustrating today is knowing that a much better device is possible, but the choices suck (like a presidential election). The innovation at palm was a right-sized device with a simple interface that did addresses, calendars and to-dos well. That is where the innovation stopped. Now innovation at Palm seems to be adopting the Windows OS. That's no innovation at all.

Finally, A Fantastic Blogging Server

I am excited to now have available, for LPS staff, a great place to have a blog.

We have been doing Manila in our district for over five years now and during that time have largely tried to use it as a content management system for normal sites. Also, during that time, web logging has become a very popular way of maintaining a site and manila has been found to be much better suited to this than it ever was for creating a hierarchical-styled site. Given this, LPS has made Macromedia Contribute available to the entire district's staff to create hierarchical sites while those that wish to move forward with web logging can do so with manila.

Those that have used manila know some of the problems that we have experienced. We had a server crash a couple of years ago in which we lost nearly all content and the box is prone to slowness and even crashes due to the number of accounts on the box. The hope with this new server is that it can serve the smaller audience of bloggers very well.

Let's Blog!!
